# Supported boards and limits

> Check which Arduino boards, cores and libraries the Escape Director Device SDK supports, its limits per prop, and how to keep a controller safe.

The Device SDK includes adapters for two Arduino boards and is tested with the
core and library versions below. Other boards need a
[board adapter](https://docs.escapedirector.com/developers/add-a-board-adapter.md).

## Boards

| Board | Arduino core | FQBN for Arduino CLI |
| - | - | - |
| Arduino UNO R4 WiFi | Arduino UNO R4 Boards 1.5.3 | `arduino:renesas_uno:unor4wifi` |
| Arduino GIGA R1 WiFi | Arduino Mbed OS Giga Boards 4.6.0, main M7 processor | `arduino:mbed_giga:giga` |

Controllers join 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. A GIGA needs its external Wi-Fi antenna.

## Libraries and apps

* **ArduinoJson** 7 (tested with 7.4.3).
* **ArduinoMqttClient** 0.1.8 or later (tested with 0.1.8).
* **Room Connector** on the Room Station, kept up to date. Puzzle completion
with `prop.completion()` needs Room Connector 0.7.2 or later.

## Limits

| Limit | Value |
| - | - |
| Props per Room | 8 |
| Signals, commands, state fields per prop | 8, 8, 16 |
| Signals, commands and state fields in total | 48 by default; more with `ed::BasicRoom` |
| ID length | 40 characters: lowercase letters, digits and hyphens, starting with a letter |
| Name length | 1 to 80 characters |

See [Capacity and memory](https://docs.escapedirector.com/developers/room-api-reference.md#capacity-and-memory)
to raise the totals.

## Keep a controller safe

* **Not a safety controller.** Keep emergency exits, safety interlocks and
other life-safety functions independent of the SDK.
* **Pairing data isn't encrypted.** After pairing, the board stores the Wi-Fi
name and password and its Room Station credentials. Anyone with physical or
USB access can read them, so keep controllers in locked or staff-only areas.
* **Before you reuse, sell or throw away a board,** erase its storage with a
sketch that clears it. Pairing again isn't enough: the board keeps the
  previous record as a backup.
* **If a paired board leaves your control,** pair a replacement controller for
that Device. This revokes the old board's access. Treat the saved Wi-Fi
password as exposed and change it.
* **Your wiring and code are yours.** Power loads through suitable drivers and
relays, and check each board's pin voltage limits.
