# Remove or reinstall Room Connector

> Uninstall, reinstall or reset Room Connector on a Mac or Windows escape room computer, and fix a Room Connector that won't start.

Room Connector is the app on the Room Station that talks to your controllers.
You install it from **All Rooms → Edit → Devices**. This page covers removing
it, reinstalling it to fix a broken install, and starting over on a computer.

Finish any running game before you quit or remove Room Connector. Props can't
report to the Room Dashboard while it's closed.

## What a reinstall keeps

Room Connector keeps its setup in a data folder that removing the app doesn't
delete. The folder holds this computer's connection to each paired controller,
the saved settings of existing HTTP and MQTT devices, and Room Connector's log.

| Computer | Data folder |
| - | - |
| **Mac** | `~/Library/Application Support/Escape Director/Room Connector` |
| **Windows** | `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Escape Director\Room Connector` |

| What you do | Controllers | Your Rooms, Devices and Puzzle links |
| - | - | - |
| Remove the app, or reinstall it | Reconnect on their own | Kept |
| Also delete the data folder | Need setup again over USB | Kept |

Your Rooms, Devices, props and Puzzle links are saved in your Escape Director
account, so neither choice deletes them.

## Remove Room Connector from a Mac

1. Click Room Connector's icon in the menu bar and choose **Quit Room
   Connector**.
2. Open **System Settings → General → Login Items**.
3. If Room Connector is listed under **Open at Login**, select it and choose
   the minus button (**−**).
4. In Finder, open **Applications** and move **Room Connector** to the Trash.

## Remove Room Connector from Windows

1. Right-click Room Connector's icon in the system tray, at the bottom right
of the screen, and choose **Quit Room Connector**.
2. Open **Settings → Apps → Installed apps**.
3. Find **Room Connector**, choose the menu button (**…**), then **Uninstall**.
4. Confirm the uninstall.

Uninstalling also turns off **Start at login** and removes the link Chrome
uses to open Room Connector.

## Reinstall Room Connector

Reinstall when Room Connector won't start, or keeps stopping, after you quit
and reopen it.

1. Remove Room Connector, using the steps for
   [a Mac](#remove-room-connector-from-a-mac) or
   [Windows](#remove-room-connector-from-windows).
2. In Chrome, open **All Rooms → Edit → Devices** and download Room Connector
   again.
3. Install and open it as you did the first time. See
   [Connect Room Connector](https://docs.escapedirector.com/build-your-rooms/connect-room-devices.md#1-connect-room-connector).
4. If the **Devices** tab doesn't say Room Connector is **Connected**, choose
**Set up Room Connector** and choose **Connect** in Room Connector's window.
5. Check that each Device shows as online, then test its props in **Test
   mode**.
6. If this computer runs the Room every day, turn **Start at login** back on
from Room Connector's menu. Removing the app turns it off.

You don't need to pair your controllers again. A new download of the same
version may still ask you to approve it in **Privacy & Security** on a Mac, or
show **Windows protected your PC**.

## If Room Connector won't start

| What you see | What to do |
| - | - |
| On Windows, **Open Room Connector without administrator privileges** | Open Room Connector from the Start menu. Don't use **Run as administrator**. |
| **Room Connector could not start its local connection** | Choose **Quit Room Connector** from the tray menu, end any **RoomConnector.exe** left in Task Manager, then open it again. If it still fails, restart the computer. |
| On a Mac, **Room Connector stopped. Quit and reopen it.** | Choose **Quit Room Connector** from the menu bar, then open it from **Applications**. |
| Chrome doesn't offer to open Room Connector from **Set up Room Connector** | Reinstall Room Connector. Installing it sets up the link Chrome uses again. |
| The icon is dimmed | Room Connector stopped. Quit and reopen it. If it stays dimmed, reinstall it. |

If a problem continues after a reinstall, send support the file
`connector.log` from the data folder. Don't send any other file from that
folder: some hold this computer's private keys.

## Start over on this computer

Delete the data folder only when support asks you to, or when you're retiring
this computer as a Room Station.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Deleting the data folder can't be undone. Every controller paired with this
> computer stops connecting until you set it up again over USB, and existing
> HTTP and MQTT devices lose their saved passwords and tokens.

1. Remove Room Connector, using the steps for
   [a Mac](#remove-room-connector-from-a-mac) or
   [Windows](#remove-room-connector-from-windows).
2. Delete the **Room Connector** folder:
   * **Mac:** in Finder, choose **Go → Go to Folder**, enter
     `~/Library/Application Support/Escape Director`, and move **Room
     Connector** to the Trash.
   * **Windows:** press **Windows + R**, enter
`%LOCALAPPDATA%\Escape Director`, and delete **Room Connector**.
3. Install Room Connector again from **All Rooms → Edit → Devices**.
4. For each controller, open the Device's menu, choose **Controller setup**,
connect the controller by USB, and follow the prompts to reconnect it.
5. For each existing HTTP or MQTT device, enter its password or token again.
For incoming HTTP, copy the new **X-ED-Token header** into the device.

The same steps move your controllers to a new computer: install Room Connector
there, then run **Controller setup** for each controller.
